Steve Jobs was a design genius. Step into any Apple store in the world and look at the sleek, clean lines and perfect symmetry of the environment. Because of his close attention to detail, I always dreamed Jobs would one day design a fashion line–at least a black turtleneck collection with a built-in iPod pouch or something cool like that. He brought the personal computer in our homes. His inventions such as the iPhone, iPad, MacBook and iPod have forever changed the way we communicate, interact globally, work and entertain ourselves. While I’ve never met Jobs, I felt connected to him, as many people do, through his inventions and his inventive, inspiring approach at life itself. Jobs was a true visionary and I will forever be in awe of the lessons he left behind. Here are a few of my favorite quotes Jobs delivered over the years:
“It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”
-BusinessWeek, May 25, 1998
“That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
-BusinessWeek, May 25, 1998
“Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me … Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… that’s what matters to me.”
-The Wall Street Journal, May 25, 1993
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
-Stanford commencement speech, June 2005
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”
-Stanford commencement speech, June 2005
