I had never been to Florida Supercon until July 2, but I can tell you I will definitely be going back next year. The people watching factor was off the charts intriguing. The main attraction for my attendance this year was a shot at meeting Cary Elwes. The British actor starred in my most beloved childhood movie, The Princess Bride. I never thought I would get an opportunity to meet the actor. I thought he was fantastic as stalked journalist Nick Eliot in the Alicia Silverstone Lolita-ish 1993 film, The Crush. And I also enjoyed his performance in the Mel Brooks’ classic Robin Hood: Men In Tights. I was 7 years old when The Princess Bride was released in theaters. My mom got me the VHS of it when it came out and I watched it until it wouldn’t play anymore. My favorite line in the movie was when Elwes’ character Wetsley would say “As You Wish.” The little girl in me was finally fulfilled when the actor gave me an autograph with those words. He also signed my Princess Bride T-shirt without me even asking him. Out of the hundred or so celebrities I’ve met over the years, I was really nervous to meet him. Meeting your childhood idol is risky business. If they are not nice to you, it’s soul crushing. But thank God, Elwes was nice to me or I think I would’ve just cried myself to sleep clutching my Punky Brewster doll that night.
Aside from The Princess Bride actor’s appearance, there was also a large Tron fanbase there to see original Tron stars Bruce Boxleitner and Cindy Morgan and check out the Geek Film Festival, which offered local and national films that fit the nerd genre. While there was an intense schedule of music, wrestling matches, cosplay dating games and karaoke, there was nothing quite as interesting as the fashion statements people made that day. From graphic novel characters to vampires, there was something for everyone in the “Freak Chic” fashion parade of people merely walking around the convention. Look here if you dare…
